Previously, the style was referred to variously as the Kōetsu school (光悦派, Kōetsu-ha), or Kōetsu-Kōrin school (光悦光琳派, Kōetsu-Kōrin-ha), or the Sōtatsu-Kōrin school (宗達光琳派, Sōtatsu-Kōrin-ha).

Azuchi-Momoyama period, also called Momoyama Period, (1574–1600), in Japanese history, age of political unification under the daimyo Oda Nobunaga and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who finally brought all provinces under the control of the central government.

The Momoyama Period is known for its images of bold warriors and luxurious palaces. a division of Japanese history running from approximately 1603 to 1868. The Edo Period was characterized by many different schools of painting.

The ensuing four decades of constant warfare are known as the Momoyama (Peach Hill) period. The name derives from the site, in a Kyoto suburb, on which Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598) built his Fushimi Castle. Peace was finally restored by one of Hideyoshi’s generals, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542–1616).

The term Edo now connotes a distinctive aesthetic sensibility that spans a wide range of art forms, including screen paintings, scrolls, sculptures, ceramics, lacquers, textiles, and woodblock prints.

“Rinpa” is a modern term that refers to a distinctive style of Japanese pictorial and applied arts that arose in the early seventeenth century and has continued through modern times. Literally meaning “school of Korin,” Rinpa derives its name from Ogata Korin (1658–1716), a celebrated painter from Kyoto.

Haboku (破墨) and Hatsuboku (溌墨) are both Japanese painting techniques employed in suiboku (ink based), as seen in landscape paintings, involving an abstract simplification of forms and freedom of brushwork. The two terms are often confused with each other in ordinary use.

The 19th century also saw the continuation of masters of the ukiyo-e tradition, with the creation of the artist Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, one of the most well-known works of Japanese art, and the artist Hiroshige’s The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō.

Utagawa Kunisada, 1786-1865 Utagawa Kunisada was the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of the Ukiyo-e period and his total output is estimated at more than 20,000 designs.

Ukiyo-e were used to help children with their reading and to learn the names of birds and flowers. After Japan reopened its doors to the world after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, ukiyo-e prints showing the alphabet and basic English vocabulary also made an appearance.

Professional artists who were drawing for wealthy people in the old days, such as court nobles and samurai, began to draw the social life of the early modern era, which captured the daily life of common people. It eventually resulted in ukiyo-e, reflecting the hedonistic mood of the time.

An ukiyo-e woodblock print is not something created by just one artist. It takes the cooperation of three people–one to draw the design, one to carve it, and one to print the image–to finish one work. The horishi (carver) pastes the sketch on a block made of wild cherry wood and carves out the design.

The influence of ukiyo-e prints can be seen in many artists’ work, including Degas, Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec. During the 1860’s Degas began collecting Japanese ukiyo-e prints, which gradually influenced his painting style.

Ukiyo-e, often translated as “pictures of the floating world,” refers to Japanese paintings and woodblock prints that originally depicted the cities’ pleasure districts during the Edo Period, when the sensual attributes of life were encouraged amongst a tranquil existence under the peaceful rule of the Shoguns.

Yamato-e very often depict narrative stories, with or without accompanying text, but also show the beauty of nature, with famous places meisho-e (名所絵) or the four seasons shiki-e (四季絵)….Artists

The Tale of Genji was an important book at the time because it was the first novel ever written and was popular among the Heian court. However, it still remains important today because it is a psychological novel that takes a look into what court life was like during the Heian period.

Tô no Chûjô

A strong feeling of affection and concern towards another person, accompanied by sexual attraction (“love”). Genji outlived Murasaki to only be filled by guilt and sorrow.

Genji is a romantic hero for many different reasons. He shares many traits with the English romantic poets through both the way he lives his life and through his poetry. He understands and appreciates the ephemeral qualities of life, in turn giving him the heightened sensibilities required of a poet.
