Korsman’s historic grassland vegetation was initially classified as part of the larger Cymbopogon-Themeda Veld (Acocks 1953). More recently Mucina & Rutherford (2006) further classified it as a distinct vegetation type, Soweto Highveld Grassland.

Natural vegetation in South Africa varies from savanna through grassland with fewer trees to scrub and scattered bush and drier western areas. Because of dry summers Western Cape has a distinct vegetation of grasses, shrubs, and trees. The eastern coast has a more tropical plant life.

Grassland biome

Soweto has always been poor, a dumping ground for unwanted black settlements. The name Soweto is an abbreviation of South Western Townships, a community spread across 31 square miles of former farmland – roughly half the size of Washington – 10 miles southwest of Johannesburg.

In 1931, black people were relocated to what was to become the first township of Soweto, namely Orlando. Most of the 1st generation Sowetans, who were relocated to Orlando, were from Prospect.

Soweto is a safe place to visit for a day tour but with conditions. Don’t venture into the city on your own and go to areas that aren’t safe if you’re unfamiliar with the city and follow all the usual tourist rips to keep safe and avoid falling victim to a crime.

The first residents of what is now known as Soweto were located into the area called Klipspriut in 1905 following their relocation from “Coolietown” in the centre of Johannesburg as a result of an outbreak of bubonic plague.
