The city is often described as Africa’s economic powerhouse, and contentiously as a modern and prosperous African city. Johannesburg is called eGoli, literally meaning “the place of gold.” Durban is called eThekwini, which translates as “In the Bay” (although some controversy was caused when several eminent Zulu linguists claimed that the name actually means “the one-testicled one” referring to the shape of the bay).

About three-fourths of Johannesburg’s citizens are Black, fewer than one-fifth are white, and most of the remainder are Coloured or Asian/Indian. Such figures, however, scarcely do justice to the city’s polyglot population.

There is 1 434 856 households in the municipality with an average household size of 2,8 persons per household. 64,7% of households have access to piped water, 26,9% have water in their yard and only 1,4% of households do not have access piped water.
