Eagles. All birds of prey have excellent long-distance vision, but eagles stand out. They can see clearly about eight times as far as humans can, allowing them to spot and focus in on a rabbit or other animal at a distance of about two miles.

Whether they have eyes at the front or on the sides of their heads, all birds can still see straight ahead. But that doesn’t mean all birds see things in the same way. Parrots, pigeons and other birds with eyes on the sides of their heads have a much bigger field of vision, of about 300 degrees.

There are many reasons. First, bird eyes are huge in relation to the size of their heads. They are proportionately much larger than human eyes. The eyes of eagles and owls are about the size of human eyes or larger, and the eyes of the Common Ostrich are about twice as large as those of humans.

Humans have three types of photoreceptors, or cones, in the retina, defined by the color of the light they absorb: red, green, and blue. Not only do birds have more types of cones, they have more of them. What’s more, birds’ cone cells contain a colored oil droplet, which may allow them to distinguish even more colors.

However, birds also have the ability to focus on something that is directly to their side. They can focus on something that is to their side and focus on it with just one eye at a time. This is called monocular vision.

Researchers said on Thursday that the red brittle star, called Ophiocoma wendtii, is only the second creature known to be able to see without having eyes – known as extraocular vision – joining a single species of sea urchin.

While you may not be familiar with the sounds made underwater by the humpback whales, the sounds you are able to hear are the ones created by surface behaviour. The sound this creates can be heard above and below the water.

Sperm whales are so loud that their clicks are capable of killing a human within their vicinity, says one science and adventure journalist. “These clicks are so powerful in the water that they can blow out your eardrums easily, and they can actually vibrate a human body to death,” he said.

The bone structure of the middle and inner ears is modified from that of terrestrial (land-based) mammals to accommodate hearing underwater. Humpback whales produce moans, grunts, blasts and shrieks. Whales also emit low frequency sound waves.

Dolphin’s have much better hearing than humans, 7 times better in fact. They can hear a wider range of frequencies and ultrasounds (high frequency) exceptionally well. A dolphin’s hearing range is from about 20 Hz to 150 kHz. Dolphins also use sound to communicate underwater.

Dolphins chat with one another using a variety of sounds like whistles and clicks. Some of these noises have frequencies below 20 kilohertz, which humans can hear.

Dolphins cannot hear human voices because they hear on a higher pitch than humans speak. Human voices are too low in pitch for them to hear.
