Long haired cats are the archetypally beautiful cat breed. For all cat-lovers who like long haired cats, Persian cats are naturally the first choice. They have far and away the longest hair. Semi long haired cats also have very beautiful fur, though it doesn’t grow quite as long as that of Persians.

American Longhair cats tend to be medium in size. A fully grown American Longhair cat might weigh between 8-15 pounds or more and range in height anywhere from about 10″-14″ inches tall.

The Domestic Long Hair is capable of a wide range of temperaments because of its mixed breeding background. Some can be friendly and playful while others can be shy and quiet. Others can be independent or aloof.

The long coat may have been the result of a recessive mutant gene. When a long-haired cat is mated to one with a short coat, only short-haired kittens can result; however, their offspring when mated, can produce a proportion of long-coated kittens.

In the cat fancy, and among veterinarians and animal control agencies, domestic long-haired cats may be classified with organisation-specific terminology (often capitalized), such as Domestic Longhair (DLH), House Cat, Longhair (HCL), or Semi-Longhair Household Pet.

In other words, fluffy cat breeds are comparatively rare. But what fluffy cats lack in ubiquity, they more than make up for in variety. Their impressive manes run the gamut from fine and flowing to full and frizzy.

Fluffy cat breeds are cats that have plush, full coats and fluffy tails that stand away from the body. Some long-haired breeds don’t make the cut because while they may have long hair, it may be more silky and lay flatter, or they may have a fluffy tail, but less volume on the body like the Turkish Angora.

As kittens, cats will knead their mothers’ warm, fluffy underbellies to stimulate milk flow. This kneading behavior, akin to sucking one’s thumb, persists into a cat’s adulthood as an instinctual “tick” that occurs when a cat is feeling particularly relaxed and comfortable.
