Jessie Holmes rounded out the top 15 to finish the 2021 Iditarod Dog Sled Race.

Each musher must carry mandatory items: a sleeping bag, an axe, a pair of snowshoes, eight booties for each dog etc.. The musher will be disqualified for cruel or inhumane treatment of dogs or for improper dog care.

Fees are as follows, based on dates: $4k from opening day through November 30, 2021 11:59pm AKDT. Past champions pay $3950.

Canine paws withstand severe temperatures but honestly, the humans – how do they keep their feet warm? Let me tell you about the boots people wear to keep their paws – oops, I mean feet – warm out on the Iditarod Trail. Many mushers, volunteers, and veterinarians wear a boot called the Trans Alaska Boot.

Royer competes in events where she shoots balloons with pistols while sprinting on horseback. Royer said that in 17 years she has only packed a gun once on the Iditarod.

The short answer is yes, sled dogs do get frostbite. Frostbite is, quite simply, the freezing of a body tissue. This is a concern when an unprotected area of the body is exposed to extremely low temperatures. Not only severe cold, but wind and moisture play a part.

Yes, sled dogs wear boots for paw protection. Wearing boots protects every part of their paws, and prevents injuries and discomfort. Dogs also wear boots sometimes while training for races.

The sled dogs also wear booties, but they aren’t for preventing frostbite. Instead, they minimize abrasions and the chance of cuts on dogs’ feet. Extreme cold makes the snow harsh like sandpaper, according to Whiton. The boots also keep balls of ice from collecting around the dogs’ foot pads.

Breed type certainly does play a factor in how susceptible a dog is to getting frostbite. Obviously, cold weather breeds such as the Siberian Husky and the Alaskan Malamute are less prone to this condition, but all breeds run the risk of frostbite and hypothermia when exposed to cold temperatures for a length of time.
