They travelled by horse, camel, and elephant (respectively) to present the newborn baby Jesus with three symbolic gifts: gold, because Jesus was royalty as “King of the Jews;” frankincense, which represented the baby’s holy nature as the Son of God; and myrrh to signify Jesus’ mortality.

Frankincense in the Bible Since his ascension to heaven, Christ serves as high priest for believers, interceding for them with God the Father. Myrrh is a reddish-brown dried sap from a thorny tree — Commiphora myrrha, also known as C. molmol — that is native to northeastern Africa and southwest Asia ( 1 , 2). A steam distillation process is used to extract myrrh essential oil, which is amber to brown in color and has an earthy scent (3).

Frankincense and myrrh are both resins extracted from trees in the Burseraceae family, also known as the torchwood or incense family. Frankincense comes from the dried sap of Boswellia trees, while myrrh comes from the lifeblood of the Commiphora.

The aroma of Myrrh can be described as woody, warm, aromatic and pungent, and slightly medicinal. Like Frankincense, it is an aromatic oleo-gum-resin (Oleoresin: a natural blend of essential oil and resin). It comes from various species of the genus Commiphora of the plant family Burseraceae.
