The letter z (Z uppercase) is the last letter, thus nothing comes after z. Other languages: The only other language I know is my native, Swedish. Its alphabet is identical to the English alphabet from a to z, but after that comes “å”, “ä” and “ö”.

If you’re using an alphabetical system, you’ll file numbers in ascending order, that is smallest to largest, the same way you would proceed through the alphabet. When you get to letters, initials go first within their letter designation.

Such symbols are arranged after a space but before a numeral. Two or more contiguous symbols should be treated as a single character. All headings beginning with a numeral should be arranged ahead of any heading begin- ning with a letter, not as if spelled out (Figure 1).

Alphabetical order is a system whereby character strings are placed in order based on the position of the characters in the conventional ordering of an alphabet. To determine which of two strings of characters comes first when arranging in alphabetical order, their first letters are compared.

Strictly speaking, there is no difference between Mac and Mc. The contraction from Mac to Mc has occurred more in Ireland than in Scotland, with two out of three Mc surnames originating in Ireland, but two out of three Mac surnames originating in Scotland.
