The current generation Ford Escape is sold with three tire sizes depending on the trim you choose: The S, SE, and SE Sport come with 17-inch wheels and 225/65R17 tires. OEM tires are either Michelin Primacy A/S or Continental Procontact TX. The SEL comes with 18-inch wheels and 225/60R18 tires.

The two-digit number after the slash mark in a tire size is the aspect ratio. For example, in a size P215/65 R15 tire, the 65 means that the height is equal to 65% of the tire’s width. The bigger the aspect ratio, the bigger the tire’s sidewall will be.

Up-sizing, or installing a taller tire, will lead to a speedometer reading that is slower than your actual speed. This is because a taller tire will have a larger overall circumference, which will cause it to travel more distance per revolution than the original equipment tire.

Yes you can, provided you keep the overall tire circumference the same. For instance, I also swapped from 18 to 20 inch wheels, but the tires changed in diameter and profile as well. On the 18’s, the OEM front tires are 245/45/18, whereas they are 255/35/20 on the 20 inch wheels.

19-inch wheels offer an opportunity to upgrade performance for a bit less money than going with a set of 20” tires but they give up ultimate good looks.

Weight Savings If you have 18-inch steel wheels, upgrading to 20-inch alloy wheels could save weight, which improves the steering response and cornering of the vehicle. The lighter rotational weight also could provide a small increase in acceleration.

The 19-inch wheels definitely look the coolest. But the 17- and 18-inch setups offer a better compromise of grip, acceleration, price, and ride harshness, so we’re not surprised VW uses 17- and 18-inch sizes on its hot Golf, the GTI. If it’s acceleration you’re after, stick with the smaller, lighter wheels and tires.
