A fully charged battery should read approximately 12.6VDC. If it reads at or below 12VDC, recharge the battery. Allow battery to rest and test again. A battery that has been fully charged, rested, and tests between 12 and 12.6VDC might start the motorcycle, but it’s not holding a full charge.

Mechanical energy usually means the sum of the kinetic energy and potential energy. So when you ride your bike you hope that the muscular (chemical) energy is converted mainly into mechanical energy. Unfortunately friction will produce heat and sound and will reduce the amount of mechanical energy that you have.

Most of the motorcycle batteries are the conventional ‘lead-acid’ batteries. These batteries can be either of 6 volts or 12 volts. If the batteries are in good condition, then the actual value of voltages isn’t these values. When the battery is charged fully, and it’s at peak, the terminal voltage of each cell is 2.1V.

A healthy 12 volt battery should ideally register around 12.7-12.8 volts at rest, but anywhere between 12.5-13.5 volts indicates a serviceable battery. Once a battery drops below 12.4 volts, your bike will struggle to start, and at under 11.8 volts, 12 volt batteries are considered to be dead.

Depending on the bike the performance capacity should range between 2 to 36 Amp/hour and it can be either 6 or 12 Volt. CCA(Cold Cranking Amperes) can range from 30 to 540A.

At 12-14 VDC, a 350 Watt alternator can output about 25 to 29 Amps. Your headlight will take about 5 to 6 Amps. Just a guess but your ignition system and tail light probably takes less than 5 Amps.

To calculate watts from amps and volts you simply multiply them together. The maximum power output of a 5a 12v battery would be 5 * 12 = 60 watts.

While both are typically 12 volt batteries, a motorcycle battery has less Amperage and requires less amp charge rate. Most automotive chargers pump out 13 amps, 30 amps or even 50 amps.

All too often, motorcycle batteries die young, murdered by neglect. Dehydration, improper charging, and a slow discharge during storage all shorten a battery’s life. To prevent these draws from killing your battery, you could disconnect the battery, but even if there is no load on them, batteries self-discharge.

If you’re 100 pounds, a 250-watt motor may be enough for you. But if you’re 220 pounds, a 500-watt motor might be better for you because the top speed somebody on a 250-watt motor at 100 pounds can hit might be pretty close to the top speed somebody that’s 250 pounds on a 500-watt could hit.

Rear motors are best for riders wanting or needing more power, or those looking to incorporate a throttle. There are also some new electric road bikes with small 250W rear hub motors that can be very stealthy with an integrated battery for a clean, traditional appearance.

Stealth Bomber

Most conversion kits include a controller, a motorized hub, and a battery pack. You can add a motor to either the front or rear wheel of the bike. While a rear-mounted motor may give you better traction, you’ll need to make sure it’s compatible with your gearing and derailleurs.

There are various ways to convert a regular bike. You can fit a ‘powered wheel’, which comprises a wheel (rear or, more usually, front) with a motor, and sometimes also a battery, integrated into the hub. You can add some sort of friction drive connecting a motor to the rear tyre.

A development of the motorized bicycle is the moped, which commonly has only a vestigial pedal drive fitted primarily to satisfy legal requirements, and suitable only for starting the engine or for emergency use. The alternate design philosophy to the moped is the so-called motor-assist or pedal-assist bicycle.

If that is an accurate description of your motorized bicycle, you can ride it – on the road only – without a license, insurance and registration as long as you are 16 or older. Moped riders need a driver’s license, insurance and registration to be legal.

The motorized bike is great for riding in traffic, helping you carry things, and getting over tough hills. It’s a little extra kick for when you need it. It’s a get-out-of-jail-free card for when you feel lazy. It’s not that you need one, it just makes a really good back up for all those just in case situations.
