Greenland is officially the world’s largest island that is not a continent. Home to 56,000 people, Greenland has its own extensive local government, but it is also part of the Realm of Denmark. Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953, when it was redefined as a district of Denmark.

Although initially attached to Norway, Greenland came under the influence of the Danish Crown when in 1380, Norway and Denmark fell under one rule. For reasons still debated today, the Norse settlements started to die out and by the year of 1500 they were completely gone.

Greenland became a possession of Denmark in 1380 when the Norwegian kingdom came under the Danish Crown. The first Norse settlements eventually failed when the colony was neglected by Norway in the 1300s and 1400s.

The Norwegian Vikings arrived in Iceland in open Viking ships in the 9th century and settled on this cold volcanic island in the north. They persevered through unexpected volcanic eruptions, drift ice, and harsh winters, and the Icelanders, who inhabit Iceland now, are direct descendants of the Vikings.

The Vikings first rowed up the Seine to attack Paris in 845 and returned three times in the 860s. Each time they looted the city or were bought off with bribes. Taking advantage of this weakness, the Vikings attacked Paris again with a large fleet on November 25, 885.
