There were Hindus in India that didn’t want Muslims to have any majority. Nathuram Godse was one of them. He killed Gandhi for trying to give Muslims some majority and make all religions equal and unified as one.

The four challenges, or goals, as articulated by Ramchandra Guha in his book, “Gandhi, The Years That Changed The World”; were: to free India from British occupation, to end untouchability, to improve relations between Hindus and Muslims, and to make India into a self-reliant nation – economically and socially.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi or The Father of the Nation in India, undertook 17 fasts during India’s freedom movement. His longest fasts lasted 21 days. Fasting was a weapon used by Gandhi as part of his philosophy of Ahimsa (non-violence) as well as satyagraha.

“I have forgotten what food tastes like,” he said before his long-awaited breakfast. Five years after that, he had kept the vast majority of the 276 pounds (125 kg) he’d lost off, weighing in at 196 pounds (89 kg).

It is well known that Gandhi went on a hunger strike many times between 1913-1948. These fasts were of multiple durations, sometimes lasting only three or four days, other times extending up to three weeks. He fasted in different places: in South Africa, in different cities across India, in prison and at home.

Eat small amounts before you get hungry to avoid making choices you would rather not.

1. Red meats and other animal foods, including milk products and eggs, should be eliminated the last day or two.
2. Those who can precede fasting with 3-4 days of just fruits and vegetables will have the easiest time of it.

The three main qualities that define Gandhi as a hero are his strong leadership, simplicity and bravery. Leadership was one of Gandhi’s heroic qualities. One way he demonstrated leadership was by encouraging people in his village to start using homespun clothing.

With the help of Congress, Gandhi ji convinced people for starting non-cooperation movement in a peaceful way which is key factor to attain independence. He framed the concept of Swaraj and it became a crucial element in the Indian freedom struggle.
