In today’s rapidly changing world, ongoing education has become essential to both career success and survival in virtually every field.

The Task Force included leaders in continuing education, such as the American Medical Association and American Nursing Association. The Task Force developed the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) and determined universal guidelines for continuing education and training.

In general, a medical history includes an inquiry into the patient’s medical history, past surgical history, family medical history, social history, allergies, and medications the patient is taking or may have recently stopped taking.

Therefore, CEUs are necessary for certain service related professionals like engineers, educators, lawyers, nurses, architects, mental health professionals, and financial planners who are often mandated by their accrediting body or institution to earn a certain number of CEU credits every so often.

Who Gives CEUs? Businesses, associations, schools and other organizations are able to award CEUs without acquiring prior permission or approval. The CEU is considered public domain, which means that no one person or entity holds a legal claim to its usage.

In most states, a CEU is a tenth of an hour. Thus, a one hour course is equivalent to 0.1 CEU. In a two day course, which is typically 12-14 hours long, the CEUs translate to 1.2 or 1.4 CEUs.
