As with many notions in Japanese, the meaning of ki is accessible on basic, quotidian levels – tree, remember? – but the more one looks into it, it takes on deeper and broader levels of refinement and subtlety. Given this, it is essential to start on the simplest level.

Typically, you are going to find that Home Depot has the cheapest lumber between the big box stores. Lowe’s is typically the second cheapest (though it’s close). Lumber 84 is going to be the more expensive option between the three brands.

If you have an industrial lumber supplier that sells materials for making pallets, crates and form support work, then rough cut utility ( non structural, can’t be used to build a code compliant building except for decorative purposes) then it may be cheaper. Rough cut hard woods will be cheaper than dressed hardwoods.

Better Prices Lumber yards being pricier than big box stores is a myth. In many cases, your local lumber distributor is less expensive for one reason – specialization. Prices always vary with different types of wood, but you can be sure your local lumber yard is competitive in price.

The Home Depot said that “it’s quarterly sales soared by 23% as consumers stuck in the house during the coronavirus pandemic built decks, painted their walls, and tackled other repairs.” Make no mistake, DIY hit the lumber market very hard and decimated the available lumber inventory.

The pandemic shut down lumber production early on and it has caused major issues with the wood supply chain over the last year. Different varieties of plywood exist for different applications:

D-grade plywood

On average, a 4′ x 8′ sheet of 3/4″ softwood plywood weighs about 61 pounds.

MDF weighs more than plywood. As it’s quite a bit denser than plywood, MDF weighs considerably more. This can be a major issue if you’ll need to lift, hold, or clamp panels in place or construct something that requires an overhead reach, such as elevated shelves.

In 1994, rumours circulated in the British timber industry that MDF was about to be banned in the United States and Australia because of formaldehyde emissions. The US reduced its safety exposure limit to 0.3 parts per million – seven times lower than the British limit.

MDF is ideal for cutting, machining and drilling, since it does not chip easily. On the other hand, plywood is a much more stronger material, which can be used for doors, floors, staircases and outdoor furniture. It is easier to create curved surfaces with plywood, since it bends easily.

If you use MDF it should be over plywood, change it as needed. We do this in our mill, you can split with a froe better over MDF as it holds up better due to its compression, then we still have good plywood underneath once the MDF gets chopped too much. MDF is very friendly to chopping long as it doesn’t get wet.
