Apathy can be a symptom of mental health problems, Parkinson’s disease, or Alzheimer’s disease. It often lasts a long time. You may lack the desire to do anything that involves thinking or your emotions. The term comes from the Greek word “pathos,” which means passion or emotion.

Allusions can give a deeper meaning to a story by referring to another piece of work that most are familiar with. If a character within a story uses an allusion (refers to another piece of work), it can give deeper insight on what kind of person they are.

In short, allusion and illusion both are effective tools in writing. An allusion is a brief reference, whereas an illusion is an erroneous perception. An allusion is a literary device, and illusion vs. reality is a common theme in literature.

These forces not only affect our choices and actions (often without our aware of them); they create them. Freedom is thus an illusion. But they generally agree that, like everything else in the universe, human choices and actions have causes that determine them to be exactly what they are.

If a person who lacks empathy criticizes you, has an emotional outburst over a perceived slight or otherwise behaves insensitively, remember that it’s not about you. It’s about them. You’ve probably seen them behave this way around other people, too.

If someone lacks empathy, they’re someone who has trouble putting themselves in other people’s shoes. When people lack empathy, simply put, they don’t empathize with other people’s feelings. When people seem to lack empathy, they may come off as insensitive or uncaring.

Signs That Someone Lacks Empathy Even though human beings are social creatures by nature, empathy doesn’t come naturally to all of us. Some people are more empathetic than others. In more extreme cases, some people suffer from Empathy Deficit Disorder (EDD).

Alexithymia is a broad term to describe problems with feeling emotions. In fact, this Greek term used in Freudian psychodynamic theories loosely translates to “no words for emotion.” While the condition is not well-known, it’s estimated that 1 in 10 people has it.

THE BASICS. Consider for a moment that narcissistic people do not really lack empathy, but instead, their vulnerability and need for self-protection limits their freedom to express it. Consciously or unconsciously they are unwilling to empathize rather than lacking the capacity to do so.

“Empathy is truly the heart of the relationship,” said Carin Goldstein, a licensed marriage and family therapist. “Without it, the relationship will struggle to survive.” That’s because empathy requires compassion. And, without compassion, couples can’t develop a bond.
