Maa language
Samburu speak the Samburu dialect of the Maa language, which is a Nilotic language. The Maa language is also spoken by other 22 sub tribes of the Maa community otherwise known as the Maasai.

One of the benefits of visiting Samburu is that compared to the national reserves in the southern part of Kenya, this lesser-known region receives far fewer visitors, making it an excellent choice for those who want to get away from the crowds of the Masai Mara.

Samburu Reserve is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for an abundance of rare species of animals such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx. The reserve is also home to a population of close to 900 Elephants.

All three big cats, the lion, cheetah and African leopard can also be found here, as well as the elephant, Cape buffalo and hippopotamus. Other mammals frequently seen in the park include olive baboon, warthogs, Grant’s gazelle, Kirk’s dik-dik, impala, and waterbuck.

Lion ( Panthera Leo) Samburu Game Reserve is home to 40 -50 lions, the highest number over a decade according to a recent research conducted by Ewaso Lions Organization. Individual Lions (males) can hold huge territories ranging from 30 to 400 square kilometers.

Highlights and main attractions of the Laikipia Plateau. An idyllic and lesser-visited area that is often referred to as the gateway to Northern Kenya, the Laikipia Plateau is an undiscovered ecosystem of wilderness terrain that covers over two million acres and is home to indigenous Samburu, Kikuyu and Boran tribes.

Today, Samburu is home to 40 lions, the highest number in over a decade. But one of the most surprising things about working in Samburu is not the lions, however important, but the local tribe, which differs from some other notable African tribes by having a more tolerant view of top predators in general.

Wildlife & Animals – Samburu NR There are several habituated leopards, and sightings are not unusual. Elephants are plentiful, and there is a variety of antelope, including both the greater and lesser kudu, with their impressive horns. Only rhino is absent from the Big Five.

A lioness named Nadala lays on a tree in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve, where lions live solitary lives. They named her Magilani—“the clever one”—because she had to be smart to live alone here, in the harsh deserts of northern Kenya.
