Carbon dioxide extinguishers

When a fire breaks out in a confined space, it’s likely that you will use a water extinguisher (red label) or a foam extinguisher (cream label) to combat the flames. Foam extinguishers are particularly suited to fires caused by solids and liquids.

Since CO2 extinguishers don’t remove heat, care should be taken to ensure that the fire does not re-ignite. It is advised not use a CO2 fire extinguisher in a confined space, as it displaces oxygen and can asphyxiate the operator and other users.

A Class C fire extinguisher is used on fires that involve live electrical equipment, which require the use of electrically nonconductive extinguishing agents. A Class K fire extinguisher is used on fires involving cooking media (fats, grease, and oils) in commercial cooking sites such as restaurants.

A Class K fire extinguisher uses a fine wet mist consisting of an alkaline mixture, such as potassium acetate, potassium carbonate, or potassium citrate that forms a soapy foam as it is applied to the cooking oil or other substance, quenching the steam, vapors, and the fire’s risk of re-ignition.
