In general, acids react with metals to give salt and release hydrogen gas. In general, bases do not react with metals and release hydrogen gas.

Aluminum is a malleable, light, silvery-white metal. It is a good electrical conductor. It can react with both acids and bases. Combining aluminum with an acid results in a typical single displacement reaction, forming aluminum salt and gaseous hydrogen.

Oxidizing acids like nitric acid react with iron to form a passivating layer on the surface of the iron; this passivating layer protects the iron underneath from further attack by the acid, although the brittle oxides of the layer can flake off and leave the interior metal exposed.

According to the U.S. Motors’s Table of Corrosive Chemicals, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids are known to damage aluminum parts in motors, drives and gears. Very weak solutions of sulfuric acid will not damage aluminum parts if you keep them at room temperature.

Using a DIY Solution to Clean Oxidized Aluminum

• Mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar with 2 cups of warm water in a bucket or use this ratio to make a larger amount, depending on what you are cleaning.
• Wet a cloth or non-abrasive pad in the vinegar-water mixture and then use it to clean the aluminum surface gently.
