A wythe is a vertical section of a masonry wall that is one unit thick. Most older masonry structures are comprised of an outer wythe of brick (what we think of as the exterior façade of the building) and an interior wythe of brick (to which the drywall is attached).

A wythe is a continuous vertical section of masonry one unit in thickness. A wythe may be independent of, or interlocked with, the adjoining wythe(s). A single wythe of brick that is not structural in nature is referred to as a masonry veneer.

Flashing must be located beneath the first course of masonry above the finished ground level above the foundation wall or slab and at other points of support, including structural floors, shelf angles, and lintels when masonry veneers are designed per Section R703.

In a single wythe brick bearing wall system, the brick masonry serves as both the structural system and the exterior facing. A wood, steel or masonry backing system is not necessary. The interior living space of a brick bearing wall home may be the same as that of a framed home.

Mason contractors are usually directed to install flashing with their masonry product. Flashing acts as a barrier, which redirects moisture away from building interiors and back toward the exterior of the wall. The weeps should be placed directly above the flashing and extend all the way to masonry drainage plane.

Walls which support floor joists or other walls above are loadbearing. Bed recess, corridor walls and other walls which run parallel to the back and front walls of a tenement are normally loadbearing. Both brick and timber stud walls may be loadbearing.

A masonry wall composed of two walls with a space between them; the space may be filled with a material such as fiberglass to provide additional thermal insulation and sound insulation.

Single wythe walls, unlike cavity walls and veneered walls, require additional special attention regarding moisture penetration pre- vention.

Traditionally, through-wall flashing has been used to direct water away from the inside wall face and toward weep holes for drainage. Figure 2 shows one example of flashing that spans completely across the width of the wall.
