Woven fabric is any textile formed by weaving. Woven fabrics are often created on a loom, and made of many threads woven on a warp and a weft. Technically, a woven fabric is any fabric made by interlacing two or more threads at right angles to one another.

Woven fabrics are classified as to weave or structure according to the manner in which warp and weft cross each other. The three fundamental weaves, of which others are variations, are the plain, twill, and satin.

Examples of Woven Fabrics: Broadcloth, denim, drill, poplin, cotton sateen, flannelette, lawn, corduroy.

You’ll find plain weaves aplenty in your wardrobe unless you have very particular tastes:

• Canvas: heavy workwear.
• Flannel: shirts, sweaters, cardigans, jackets, blankets, and PJs.
• Lawn: light-weight shirts, blouses and linings for dresses and skirts.
• Organza: formal wear (dresses and gowns) but also found in fashionwear.

Plain/linen The plain weave, or linen weave as it is also called, is the simplest of all types of weave. Here, the threads are woven together one after the other. This weave is one of the strongest weaves, as the threads are constantly crossing over each other.

Organdy: Organdy is a fine, sheer plain weave fabric that is woven from cotton. The crisp, lightweight material is often used to line bridal gown, evening attire, curtains, and aprons. Muslin: Muslin is a loosely-woven cotton fabric.

Some cotton fabrics are more tightly woven than others. Examples of tightly woven cotton include denim, cotton sateen, percale, and poplin. Bedsheets are a good place to find cotton percale and sateen.
