Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added.

This effort led me, in 1991, to the encaustic painting technique, which involves the use of pigment mixed with hot wax as a painting medium.

Gamblin Poppy Oil is the slowest-drying oil we offer. It is useful to painters working in traditional, wet-into-wet techniques that want the longest possible working time. Use sparingly or mix with an equal amount Gamsol to create a traditional slow-drying, low-viscosity painting medium.

Encaustic, meaning “to burn in or fuse”, is an ancient painting medium first practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. The oldest known pigment binder, encaustic combines molten beeswax with dry pigment and tree resin.

Add a little of Liquitex Slow-Dri Medium or Gel to your paint to slow the drying and to help you with blending on the painting surface. You can also experiment with glazing techniques with Glazing Medium.

What Dries Paint Faster – Heat or Cold? The hotter the temperature, the faster the paint will dry. This is one reason why you see most people paint the exterior of their homes, offices, and buildings during the summer. The heat evaporates the water or moisture inside the paint which causes it to dry.

When temperatures are too high, paint dries too soon. Sunlight prevents the paint from drying smoothly. Certain types of paints dry quicker than others, especially latex. When you’re painting in hot, sunny weather, more time is needed between coats.

In the winter, you really shouldn’t paint in temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for oil based paints and 50 degrees for latex based paints. In the summer, the high temperatures for perfect application are 90 for oils and 85 for latex paints.

If the air is very still, use a fan. Air movement helps paint dry and cure faster.

Use a Hair Dryer or Heater If you need to quick-dry paint on furniture or walls, use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Keep the nozzle of the dryer about 2 inches away from the surface so that the paint doesn’t blister. Slowly move the dryer over the wet area until all areas are evenly dried.

Some acrylic paints specifically advertise their fast-drying properties. If you’re serious about acrylic paint drying times, then experiment with different brands to find the right type. Use a hairdryer. Keep the hairdryer on the lowest setting, then move it evenly over the surface to increase drying times.

Cracking occurs in acrylic paint pours when the top layer of paint dries faster than the underlying layer. As the bottom layer dries, it pulls at the semi-hardened skin on top and when the force is too much, a crack is created.

While acrylic paints are known for their quick drying properties, there are even more fast-drying versions out there. To facilitate the drying process, you can use a hairdryer. If you’re painting a small surface, like a canvass for your wall art, you can speed up the paint drying time by hovering a hair dryer.
