The principle of participation is about the Board engaging in effective participation with its stakeholders. The quality and effectiveness of an organisation depends on the involvement of all stakeholders in decision-making (from their creation to implementation).

Community participation is also described as a social process in which groups with shared needs living in a “certain geographical area” actively identify needs, make decisions, and set up mechanisms to achieve solutions (3).

Community participation can be loosely defined as the involvement of people in a commu- nity in projects to solve their own problems. Community participation is especially important in emergency sanitation programmes where people may be unaccustomed to their surroundings and new sanitation facilities.

Community involvement is so crucial because the going ons of your community directly affects you and what you do! The crime rate in your community affects your security, the pollution in your local area affects your health, the bad roads affect your route to work or to school.

The four types are: Community engagement with a focus on community development or community building. Community participation in consultation and decision-making. Community engagement that helps organisations, businesses etc. to improve their service delivery or to achieve their goals.

Participation suggests some degree of involvement in an activity or an organisation. The level of participation therefore relates to how much power or influence participants actually have.
