Gatsby maintained the lie, which allowed their relationship to progress. Gatsby fell in love with Daisy and the wealth she represents, and she with him (though apparently not to the same excessive extent), but he had to leave for the war and by the time he returned to the US in 1919, Daisy has married Tom Buchanan.

The Role of Geography The geography is a representation of the social differences that developed during the 1920’s with the rise of the newly rich represented by West Egg versus the old rich of East Egg and the decay of moral values in pursuit of the American Dream.

So, the simple answer is that the books represent the fact that Gatsby is a fraud. He’s built up an image of himself that isn’t consistent with the facts of his life. But you could also argue that the unopened, unread books represent Gatsby himself: eternally mysterious, eternally unopened.

They may represent God staring down upon and judging American society as a moral wasteland, though the novel never makes this point explicitly. Instead, throughout the novel, Fitzgerald suggests that symbols only have meaning because characters instill them with meaning.

The symbols are noticed through the character and narrator as they themselves perceive it. How does the geography of the novel dictate its themes and characters? It reinforces all of the characters personalities and their actions to certain situations. Even the weather corresponds with the theme of great gatsby.

PROOF ONE: Why did Daisy Marry Tom? Daisy chose Tom because to her he represented a secure social position and the wealth she was accustomed to. Daisy believed that Tom could make her happy because he represented things that made her happy besides love, like material things and money.
