Andrew Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835, and his family moved to Pennsylvania when young Andrew was thirteen. John D. Rockefeller was born four years later in upstate New York — the son of a trader, who moved him to Cleveland when he was six.

Andrew Carnegie, (born November 25, 1835, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland—died August 11, 1919, Lenox, Massachusetts, U.S.), Scottish-born American industrialist who led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He was also one of the most important philanthropists of his era.

Included in the list of so-called robber barons are Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and John D. Rockefeller. Robber barons were accused of being monopolists who earned profits by intentionally restricting the production of goods and then raising prices.

Born into modest circumstances in upstate New York, he entered the then-fledgling oil business in 1863 by investing in a Cleveland, Ohio refinery. In 1870, he established Standard Oil, which by the early 1880s controlled some 90 percent of U.S. refineries and pipelines.

Rockefeller always treated his employees with fairness and generosity. He believed in paying his employees fairly for their hard work and often handed out bonuses on top of their regular salaries. In 1937, before his death, Rockefeller gave away almost half his fortune. …

Most people who were “close” to having a 10th of his money were mostly robber barons. Rockefeller was considered a “Captain of Industry” because he founded the Standard Oil Company and became a philanthropist, who donated over $to charities, universities, and churches.

They were the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, in memory of his wife, and the General Education Board. The University of Chicago was another large beneficiary.
