Christianity has been historically intertwined with Western civilization. However, it is difficult to decide what its effects were. Through its long history, the Church has been a major source of social services such as schooling. Several universities were founded by the Church.

In developing their law, they sometimes borrowed legal concepts from other civilizations as well as passing on their own ideas. The Jewish law that developed influenced Roman law, English law, and our own Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

Judaism has had a profound influence on Western civilization. As a result, moral and ethical ideas developed by Judaism helped shape Western ideas about law, morality, and social justice. Judaism influenced other areas of Western civilization including religious belief, literature, and weekly schedules.

Judaism influenced the development of Christianity and Islam, and had a major influence on Western civilization – Christianity, the eventually dominant religious faith of the West, was in large part a child of the Hebrew religion. All of the major Western religions found their roots in Judaism.

The Bible and Christian theology have also strongly influenced Western philosophers and political activists. The teachings of Jesus, such as the Parable of the Good Samaritan, are among the most important sources of modern notions of human rights and the welfare commonly provided by governments in the West.

It is in Christians of many and various responses that Christianity gains its unique multi-cultural and polyvocal texture as a world religion. Those Christians who embrace surrounding cultures use indigenous language, music, art forms, and rituals as potent resources for their own ends.

Followers of the Christian religion base their beliefs on the life, teachings and death of Jesus Christ. Christians believe in one God that created heaven, earth and the universe. The belief in one God originated with the Jewish religion. Christians believe Jesus is the “Messiah” or savior of the world.

Religion can affect more than a particular person’s habits. These beliefs and practices can influence an entire community, nation, or region. Religious practices shape, and are shaped by, the culture around them.

Religions influence areas of living in society such a how they treat money. Money is used more ethically by religious adherents than those who are not. Care of the environment is also a religious moral based on values of creation. There are issues in society such as abortion which religious values impact as well.

Traditional cultural geographical approaches to the study of religion mainly seek to determine religion’s impact on the landscape. Religious experiences and the belief in religious meanings transforms physical spaces into sacred spaces.

Religion gives people something to believe in, provides a sense of structure and typically offers a group of people to connect with over similar beliefs. These facets can have a large positive impact on mental health—research suggests that religiosity reduces suicide rates, alcoholism and drug use.

In addition to its intrinsic value, culture provides important social and economic benefits. With improved learning and health, increased tolerance, and opportunities to come together with others, culture enhances our quality of life and increases overall well-being for both individuals and communities.

It improves health, learning, economic well-being, self-control, self-esteem, and empathy. It reduces the incidence of social pathologies, such as out-of-wedlock births, crime, delinquency, drug and alcohol addiction, health problems, anxieties, and prejudices.
