Academic integrity is: ‘the expectation that teachers, students, researchers and all members of the academic community act with: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. ‘ Breaching academic integrity is also known as ‘academic misconduct’ or ‘academic dishonesty’.

Academic Integrity is the code of ethical standards and honesty in academic institutions. The standards and values provide an educational environment in which all students can learn and take responsibility for their work. Academic integrity includes avoiding plagiarism, but it includes many other things as well.

Copying from another student’s test or homework. Allowing another student to copy from your test or homework. Using materials such as textbooks, notes, or formula lists during a test without the professor’s permission.

Academic integrity is defined as: ‘a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage. A provider’s policy framework should cover the preservation of academic integrity by both staff and students.

As a student, academic integrity means making ethical decisions, asking questions, and following instructions – even when faced with difficult situations.

Scope of this policy 2 Academic integrity Academic integrity is a guiding principle in education and a choice to act in a responsible way whereby others can have trust in us as individuals. It is the foundation for ethical decision-making and behaviour in the production of legitimate, authentic and honest scholarly work.

A common theme noticed by David MacLeod and Nita Clarke in organisations with both high levels of employee engagement and high levels of performance was organisational integrity – the values on the wall are reflected in day to day behaviours. There is no ‘say–do’ gap.

Any claims or implied statements of such are fraudulent.

The International Center for Academic Integrity ( ICAI) has identified five pillars of academic integrity to generate positive conversations about integrity. Honesty is sincerity. All other pillars of academic integrity have some basis in honesty. Honest individuals take stock of individual abilities and represent their effort fairly.
