The International Date Line, established in 1884, passes through the mid-Pacific Ocean and roughly follows a 180 degrees longitude north-south line on the Earth. It is located halfway round the world from the prime meridian—the zero degrees longitude established in Greenwich, England, in 1852.

Lines of longitude (meridians) running north-south around the globe measure distances EAST and WEST of the Prime Meridian. Directly on the opposite side of the earth from the prime meridian is located the 180 meridian.

Ordinate – The vertical line, or y-axis, of a graph. Origin – The origin is the point where the X and Y axis intersect on a graph. This is the point (0,0) in a two-dimensional graph.

In a Cartesian coordinate system, the origin is the point where the axes of the system intersect. The coordinates of the origin are always all zero, for example (0,0) in two dimensions and (0,0,0) in three.

Explanation: The point given by (0,0) is called the origin. If a graph passes through the origin then the x-intercept and the y-intercept are at the same point and are therefore equal. This is the only point where the x- and y- coordinates are equal.

The strict view of the linear function A linear function of one variable. The linear function f(x)=ax is illustrated by its graph, which is the green line. Since f(0)=a×0=0, the graph always goes through the origin (0,0).

In order to reflect a graph about the origin, the rule of translation for each point is (a,b) reflects to (-a,-b). The reflection of the point (a,b) across the line y = x is (b,a). By following these rules, you can reflect any line or figure across any of the three most common lines of reflection or the origin.

The vertical axis is called the y-axis. The point at which the two axes intersect is called the origin. The origin is at 0 on the x-axis and 0 on the y-axis. Since the origin has an x-coordinate of 0 and a y-coordinate of 0, its ordered pair is written (0, 0).

The vertical line test can be used to determine whether a graph represents a function. If we can draw any vertical line that intersects a graph more than once, then the graph does not define a function because a function has only one output value for each input value.
