Ordinal numbers are the numbers that talk about the position of objects. For example, “The cookies are kept in the 3rd drawer from the top”, “The orange dress is the 7th one from the right”, “The soccer ball is kept in the 3rd carton box from the left”.

An Ordinal Number is a number that tells the position of something in a list, such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc….Most ordinal numbers end in “th” except for:

1. one ⇒ first (1st)
2. two ⇒ second (2nd)
3. three ⇒ third (3rd)

Ordinal numbers may be written in English with numerals and letter suffixes: 1st, 2nd or 2d, 3rd or 3d, 4th, 11th, 21st, 101st, 477th, etc., with the suffix acting as an ordinal indicator. Written dates often omit the suffix, although it is nevertheless pronounced.

Ordinal numbers represent a place in a series like first, second, and third. When you’re writing out a date like January 1, 2016 (in the American style), the day is written as a cardinal number. So you should never write January 1st, 2016.

Grammatically speaking, the words next, last, and another can also be regarded as ordinal numbers.

The digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0 are used to form several other cardinal numbers. Is zero (0) a cardinal number? No, zero (0) is not a cardinal number. To know “how many” there should be something.

Cardinal numbers are used to count a set of objects and tell us about quantity. We use cardinal numbers when we’re counting how many buttons are in a jar or how many children are on the playground: one, two, three, four, five, etc.

In statistics, ordinal data are the type of data in which the values follow a natural order. For example, the ranges of income are considered ordinal data while the income itself is the ratio data. Unlike interval or ratio data, ordinal data cannot be manipulated using mathematical operators.

An ordinal variable is similar to a categorical variable. The difference between the two is that there is a clear ordering of the categories. For example, suppose you have a variable, economic status, with three categories (low, medium and high).
