Race as a Social Construction Another way to say this is that race is a social construction, a concept that has no objective reality but rather is what people decide it is (Berger & Luckmann, 1963). In this view race has no real existence other than what and how people think of it.

An example of a social construct is money or the concept of currency, as people in society have agreed to give it importance/value. Strong social constructs rely on the human perspective and knowledge that does not just exist, but is rather constructed by society.

The dictionary by Merriam-Webster defines race as “a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits.” 1 Race is usually associated with biology and linked with physical characteristics, such as hair texture or skin color and covers a relatively narrow range of options.

The Revisions to OMB Directive 15 defines each racial and ethnic category as follows:

• American Indian or Alaska Native.
• Asian.
• Black or African American.
• Hispanic or Latino.
• Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.
• White.

Humans are one of the most genetically homogenous species we know of. There’s lots of genetic variation in humanity, but it’s basically at the individual level. The between-population variation is very, very minor.”

(A) The classification of people into different races is typically based on observable physical features, with skin color being the most prominently used characteristic. Racial classifications also draw upon non-biological characteristics such as culture, language, history, religion, and socioeconomic status.
