Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It’s used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it’s used in a thermometer.

The most common ones are the mouth, the ear, the armpit, and the rectum. Temperature can also be measured on your forehead.

1. Mouth: Place the probe under the tongue and close the mouth. Breathe through the nose.
2. Rectum: This method is for infants and small children. They cannot hold a thermometer safely in their mouth.
3. Armpit: Place the thermometer in the armpit. Press the arm against the body.

The dead star at the center of the Red Spider Nebula has a surface temperature of 250,000 degrees F, which is 25 times the temperature of the Sun’s surface. This white dwarf may, indeed, be the hottest object in the universe.

The photosphere, or visible surface of the Sun, typically measures up to 10,000 F (5,540 C). This means that we can determine the effective temperature of the Sun by measuring the amount of light it emits at each wavelength and comparing the resulting spectrum we see to models.

We all measure our experience in space-time differently. That’s because space-time isn’t flat — it’s curved, and it can be warped by matter and energy. And for astronauts on the International Space Station, that means they get to age just a tiny bit slower than people on Earth. That’s because of time-dilation effects.

How long can you survive in outer space? Without a space suit, you’d lose consciousness in about 15 seconds, die after 90 seconds and freeze solid within 12 to 26 hours.

“In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream.” That was the tagline for the movie Alien, Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi/horror masterpiece. Released two years earlier, Star Wars allowed us to hear plenty of things in space, like the whine of TIE fighter engines and the explosion of the Death Star.

Without a helmet, and your own personal Earth-like atmosphere surrounding you, you’ll be exposed to the hard vacuum of space. Within a moment, all the air will rush out of your lungs, and then you’ll fall unconscious in about 45 seconds. Starved for oxygen, you’ll die of suffocation in just a couple of minutes.

If you do die in space, your body will not decompose in the normal way, since there is no oxygen. If you were near a source of heat, your body would mummify; if you were not, it would freeze. If your body was sealed in a space suit, it would decompose, but only for as long as the oxygen lasted.

On Earth, farts are typically no big deal — smelly, harmless, and they quickly dissipate. But if you’re an astronaut, every fart is a ticking time bomb. The gases in farts are flammable, which can quickly become a problem in a tiny pressurized capsule in the middle of space where your fart gases have no where to go.

On February 7, 1984, Bruce McCandless became the first human to float free from any earthly anchor when he stepped out of the space shuttle Challenger and flew away from the ship. He later helped deploy the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit from the space shuttle Discovery in 1990.

There’s no doubt space is an extremely dangerous place, but only a handful of space travelers have actually died there. Following the only deaths to have ever occurred in space, the USSR started a policy requiring all cosmonauts to wear pressurized spacesuits during reentry.

According to the mission log maintained by Gene Kranz, the Apollo 13 re-entry blackout lasted around 6 minutes, beginning at 142:39 and ending at 142:45, and was 1 minute 27 seconds longer than had been predicted. Communications blackouts for re-entry are not solely confined to entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

While no astronauts have admitted having sex in space, plenty of reproduction has been going on. This is because a range of animals from fruit flies to fish – as well as their eggs, sperm and embryos – have been sent into space so we can study how they reproduce.
