Katniss realizes that Peeta is kind. Katniss feels that Peeta is more dangerous because she wants to survive; she’ll have a hard time wanting to kill him. Katniss decides to have little to do with him.

Summary: Chapter 4. Peeta volunteers to clean up Haymitch, who is drunk and has fallen in his own vomit. While Katniss sits in her room, she wonders why Peeta did this, then realizes he may just be kind. She decides this is more dangerous to her than an unlikable Peeta and determines not to get any closer with him.

Before the girl was taken, she locked eyes with Katniss and called out for help, and Katniss still feels guilty for doing nothing to help her. Katniss’ recognition of the girl Avox, a supposed traitor, adds to the tension of the dinner and stirs up guilt in Katniss.

Why is Katniss annoyed when she sees what Peeta is wearing? His outfit is identical to hers. She thinks it’s ugly. She doesn’t like the color red.

In the morning, Katniss lies in bed for a time after waking and thinks of when she first met Gale. She was in the woods hunting and saw several rabbits hanging from snares. When she went to inspect them, Gale came forward. They talked about hunting at first, and over time they became a team.

After almost dying from a trap activated by a pod, Gale is taken away by peacekeepers. As he is being taken away, he mouths at Katniss “shoot me.” She finds herself unable to do it, just as he is unable to kill her after the assassination of President Coin.

Prim had to die because Katniss was so upset about Prim’s death that she chose Peeta because Gale designed the bomb that blew Prim up.

While Gale’s treatment in the form of the blame for Prim’s death was unfair, it didn’t really matter in the end. His idea turned out to have a domino effect that resulted in the young girl’s death. It may have been a direct involvement, but Katniss couldn’t see past the connections.
