Originally sold in America by Hasbro, the Action Man range, made in Britain by Palitoy under licence, won Toy of the Year when it first appeared in the UK in 1966. The range was discontinued in 1984 and new designs appeared in 1993, but production ceased in 2006.

Action Man purists blamed the manufacturer’s political correctness for his demise as the doll’s military accessories were replaced by in-line skates, water pistols and snowboards.

The Action Man Horse is molded in two halves and bonded together. The original 1970s horse has a visible seam along the back, whereas the 40th Anniversary reissues (dating from 2006) have no visible top seam and appears as one. Both undersides have a visible seam.

Markings on the back of Sindy’s head provide the best clues to the age of the doll: 1974 to 1976: “033050X” in small print. 1977 to 1980: “2 GEN 1077” on raised rectangle, “033055X” beneath that. 1983 to 1985: Sindy logo on raised rectangle, “033055X” beneath that.
