On his way to Vienna, American Jesse (Ethan Hawke) meets Celine (Julie Delpy), a student returning to Paris. After long conversations forge a surprising connection between them, Jesse convinces Celine to get off the train with him in Vienna. Since his flight to the U.S. departs the next morning and he has no money for lodging, they wander the city together, taking in the experiences of Vienna and each other. As the night progresses, their bond makes separating in the morning a difficult choice.

Céline reveals that she was ready to get off the train with Jesse before he convinced her. The film ends the next day at the train station, where, just as Céline’s train is about to leave, the couple decides not to exchange any contact information but instead meet at the same place in six months.

In 1995’s Before Sunrise, directed like the other two films by Richard Linklater, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) spend a single romantic night together in Vienna. But that’s not the beginning. Before they can spend that night together, they have to get off the train together.

Neither Jesse nor Celine denies cheating over the course of their nine-year relationship, and when Celine storms out, it seems like their relationship might be over for good.

When they were together nine years ago, they made plans to meet again six months later. Celine was unable to make the rendezvous, but Jesse showed up. Soon after, Celine expresses disappointment that Jesse didn’t make the effort to show up.

While Jesse and Celine are not married, they are living a married life; the romance of the former often bested by the fatigue of the latter. Jesse no longer wears a leather jacket like the one that squeaked as they rolled around in the grass making out that first night eighteen years ago.

Since the pair had never exchanged phone numbers, they had no way to contact each other at the time. They reveal how their lives have changed during the nine years they spent apart. Jesse is married and has a son named Hank, while Céline has become an environmental activist and has a photojournalist boyfriend.

Delpy moved to New York in 1990 and moved to Los Angeles a few years after that. She has been a naturalized citizen of the United States since 2001, although she also retains her French citizenship. She now divides her time between Paris and Los Angeles.

Ethan, 50, and Ryan have been married since 2008 and share two daughters: Clementine, 12, and Indiana, 9. The Boyhood Oscar nominee is also dad to actress Maya Hawke, 22, and son Levon, 18, from his previous marriage to actress Uma Thurman. Not much is known about the private couple as they are rarely seen together.
