Overall, Alaska is very casual and tennis shoes are acceptable everywhere. It is encouraged to have a comfortable pair of walking shoes or tennis shoes as your staple footwear. Most trails around the lodges are very well maintained and this type of shoe is acceptable.

Weather. The temperatures will vary during your Alaska cruise, so pack layers. Bring a windbreaker or similar jacket to keep you warm in windy and moist weather. Bring warm-weather items like shorts and a bathing suit so you can be comfortable.

That said, Alaska still gets fairly extreme. For example, Barrow—one of the northernmost towns in Alaska—has about two months of darkness in the winter, from about November 18 to January 22. But in the summer, the sun doesn’t completely set for about 82 days, from roughly May 11 until July 31.
