Cars 3 hit the box office this weekend, earning the top spot even though it opened at $13 million less than 2011’s Cars 2. It’s also been over five years since the previous Cars film, which in that time has earned a reputation as Pixar’s worst movie to date.

There really isn’t anything in Cars 2 that you need to see to understand Cars 3. In fact, though it’s the same canon as Cars 1 and 3, it’s not acknowledged in Cars 3 at all. In fact, even though they’re chronological, it’s really not necessary to watch all three in order.

Which is why the fact Cars 3 distances itself from Cars 2 almost seems forgivable. Speaking to Screencrush, Cars 3 co-writer and long-time Pixar producer Bob Petersen explained the disconnect: “[Cars 2] was Mater’s world. We’re back to Radiator Springs and that team [in Cars 3] because this is McQueen’s story.”

No, Cars 3 is not better. It’s basically a copy of Cars 1. Cars 2 is better. That’s right, Cars 2 is better than Cars 3.

Project CARS 3 feels more energetic than Project CARS 2, with it seeming a bit more upbeat through its use of sounds and special effects. Graphics-wise, there is a negligible difference – PC3 looks a little crisper and more detailed, but this is nothing major.
