Although Malayalam is the official language, English is widely spoken and taught in Kerala. Another excellent feature of the state shown from the Kerala census 2011 is its gender ratio, which shows that Kerala has more female population than male. That sets the state apart from most of the India.

The northern state of Chhattisgarh had the highest gender ratio based on registered births, with 961 females per 1,000 males in 2015 and 2016. In contrast, Haryana had a gender ratio of 833 females for every 1,000 males.

The Sikh religion forbids the use of alcohol and other intoxicants. Sikhs are also not allowed eat meat – the principle is to keep the body pure. All gurdwaras are supposed to follow the Sikh code, known as the Akal Takht Sandesh, which comes from the highest Sikh authority in India.

By not cutting hair, Sikhs honour God’s gift of hair. So important is Kesh that during the persecution of Sikhs under the Mughal Empire, followers were willing to face death rather than shave or cut their hair to disguise themselves. The people are devout; not cutting their hair is/has been an emblem of their goodwill.

On its website, it said that “Sikhs are not supposed to cut hair from any part of their body. All Sikhs are thus supposed to have unshorn hair, and Sikh women are to maintain a separate identity and not shave.” They blamed the fact many women flout this rule on “societal pressure.”
