The ocean has three main layers: the surface ocean, which is generally warm, and the deep ocean, which is colder and more dense than the surface ocean, and the seafloor sediments. The thermocline separates the surface from the deep ocean. Due to density differences, the surface and deep ocean layers do not easily mix.

Abyssal waters originate at the air-sea interface in polar regions, principally the Antarctic. There, the cold climate produces sea ice and residual cold brine. Because of its high density, the brine sinks and slowly flows along the bottom toward the Equator.

Abyssopelagic Zone: This zone is also called the Abyssal Zone or the Abyss – derived from the Greek word meaning “bottomless sea.” It refers to waters directly above the continental rise (at about 3000 meters) down to about 6000m.

What Animals Are in “the Trenches” or Hadalpelagic Zone?

• Giant Tubeworms. The scientific name for the giant tube worm is Riftia pachyptila.
• Starfish. Although starfish are commonly seen on beaches and in shallow ocean water, as a species they are quite adaptable and are also found in the deep waters of the Trenches” or the Hadalpelagic Zone.
• Foraminifera (Forams)
• Cusk-eels.

One reason for this phenomenon is that the majority of the world’s largest rivers empty into either the Atlantic or the Indian Oceans, providing both ocean basins with an endless supply of the sediments from which abyssal plains are made.

The creation of the abyssal plain is the result of the spreading of the seafloor (plate tectonics) and the melting of the lower oceanic crust. Abyssal plains result from the blanketing of an originally uneven surface of oceanic crust by fine-grained sediments, mainly clay and silt.

Abyssal plains are large, flat areas, usually between the continental rise and the mid-ocean ridges or ocean trenches below the ocean surface. Abyssal plains are quite deep under the surface and are covered in sediments. Abyssal plains cover 40% of the ocean floor.
