Helsinki is a very small, compact city – considerably smaller than either Stockholm or Copenhagen. As it is located slightly further north than Stockholm (and St Petersburg!) and right next to Russia and Siberia, it would be best to leave Helsinki until some time in June, in my opinion.

Glasgow and Edinburgh are further north than Copenhagen or Malmo… Scotland share the same latitudes of the demographic and historic core of Scandinavia. Helsinki parralel is just about 200km further north as Scotland.

Greenland, when it gains independence, will fall well short too. Iceland’s southern extreme is 63°17′ North. Even so, that’s further north than Anchorage, Alaska.

Even the southernmost point of Britain is further north than the northernmost part of the contiguous United States (the 48 adjoining states, so this does not include Alaska or Hawaii), while London lies further north than almost all major Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec City, and Toronto.

Anchorage is further south than Reykjavik.

New York is 12° of latitude further south than London, for a start. It’s on about the same latitude as Madrid, and in high summer it feels like it.

Human habitation Only four million people live north of the Arctic Circle because of the climate; nonetheless, some areas have been settled for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, who today make up 10% of the region’s population.
