The irony in “The Maze Runner” is situational. You wouldn’t expect for a girl to arrive into the Glade because only guys have arrived, but instead Teresa, a girl, shows up.

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), a teenager, arrives in a glade at the center of a giant labyrinth. Like the other youths dumped there before him, he has no memory of his previous life. Thomas quickly becomes part of the group and soon after demonstrates a unique perspective that scores him a promotion to Runner status — those who patrol the always-changing maze to find an escape route. Together with Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), the only female, Thomas tries to convince his cohorts that he knows a way out.

The theme of The Maze Runner is persistence is the key to survive. Thomas was the main character who made this theme true. This can be seen how without Thomas’s stubborn determination, the people in the Glade with him may have died and how Thomas would have died from the Griever if he gave up.

Massive solar flares ravaged the planet and turned the area between the two Tropics, Cancer and Capricorn, into the wastelands known as the Scorch. The cataclysmic event devastated Human civilization and brought irrevocable changes to both Earth’s climate and environment for centuries to come.

The Maze is a complex symbol representing both chaos and order. Every night the walls move and shift, making it harder for the Gladers to find an exit. These constant changes along with the apparent impossibility of actually solving the Maze make most of the Gladers see the Maze as a symbol of futility and chaos.

Plot Summary. The Maze Runner is a young adult novel set in a post-apocalyptic world. The story begins in a dark metal elevator, where a teenage boy awakens with no real memories other than the fact that his name is Thomas. When the elevator stops and the doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by teenage boys.

Manipulation is the most obvious idea presented throughout the novel The Maze Runner. Because of the involvement of WICKED, the group of evil conspirators, the 60 boys and 1 girl are forced to experience tragic and unbearable sequences of events.

Directed by Wes Ball, the film version of The Maze Runner has finally found its female lead in the form of Kaya Scodelario. British-born, the 21-year-old actress made her screen debut in Duncan Jones ’ Moon, which she followed up with a turn in Clash of the Titans, but she’s still best known for her role on Skins.
