The elements of art are both fun and useful. Remember ​line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color. Knowing these elements will allow you to analyze, appreciate, write and chat about art, as well as being of help should you create art yourself.

First and most importantly, a person cannot create art without utilizing at least a few of them. Secondly, knowing what the elements of art are, it enables us to describe what an artist has done, analyse what is going on in a particular piece and communicate our thoughts and findings using a common language.

The elements, or principles, of visual design include Contrast, Balance, Emphasis, Movement, White Space, Proportion, Hierarchy, Repetition, Rhythm, Pattern, Unity, and Variety. These principles of design work together to create something that is aesthetically pleasing and optimizes the user experience.

Line is one of the most important Elements of Art. Imagine creating a painting, sculpture or design without drawing lines to divide the paper or canvas into shapes and forms!. Think about how important a role Line plays in the creation process.

Traditional way of looking at art, namely the visual arts, suggests that there are five basic elements of an art work – line, shape, color, texture and space.

And that’s really all we’re going to do here, except we use a pencil and simplify a complex figure to just five basic geometric shapes – the triangle, oval, oblong, circle and square.

There are two main types of shapes, geometric and organic. While most works of art contain both geometric and organic shapes, looking at those that are more completely divided can serve to clarify these qualities.

In the visual arts, shape is a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines, textures, colours or an area enclosed by other shapes such as triangles, circles, and squares. Likewise, a form can refer to a three-dimensional composition or object within a three-dimensional composition.

Examples of geometric shapes are: squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, oval, pentagons and so on.

The four ways to describe shape are whether it is symmetric, how many peaks it has, if it is skewed to the left or right, and whether it is uniform. A graph with a single peak is called unimodal. A single peak over the center is called bell-shaped. And, a graph with two peaks is called bimodal.

The arts have also been classified as seven: painting, architecture, sculpture, literature, music, performing and cinema.

We live in a world of three dimensions. Everything around us, from the houses we live in to the objects we use in everyday life, has three dimensions: height, length, and width.
