Chad has a hot and tropical climate, though temperatures do vary depending on area. The southern rainy season runs May-October, and the central rains from June-September. The north has very little rain all year. The dry season is often windy, and cooler during the evenings.

Chadians are generally friendly and relaxed, but they expect foreigners to respect their customs and beliefs. Dress is informal, but conservative to show respect for the Muslim laws. Muslim areas are strictly segregated between women and men.

A global price drop in barrels of oil hit Chad hard, because oil makes up more than 90 percent of the country’s exports. Eight out of 10 Chadians make a living from agriculture and livestock even though much of the country is a desert, so people’s livelihoods depend on rain.

The country’s topography is generally flat, with the elevation gradually rising as one moves north and east away from Lake Chad. The highest point in Chad is Emi Koussi, a mountain that rises 3,100 m (10,171 ft) in the northern Tibesti Mountains.

Chad is extremely dangerous due to the risk of terrorism, kidnapping, unrest and violent crime. Violent conflict with armed rebels has occurred in northern Chad following national elections on 11 April. Terrorist attacks are also a major risk in Chad, especially by the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram.

Chad is a low-income, land-locked country that suffers from chronic food and nutrition insecurity due to the effects of regional conflict, frequent drought, limited income-generating opportunities, and restricted access to social services.

Chad has two official languages, French and Modern Standard Arabic, and over 120 indigenous languages. A vernacular version of Arabic, Chadian Arabic, is a lingua franca and the language of commerce, spoken by 40-60% of the population.

Poor Health Conditions in Chad Lead to Disease Along with malaria, lower respiratory diseases contribute to Chad’s high mortality rate – the most common and deadliest of those being meningitis. Lower respiratory tract infections occur in the lungs and can sometimes affect the brain and spinal cord.
