Victoria Falls is roughly twice the height of Niagara, but while it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it is classified as the largest, based on its width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft) and height of 108 metres (354 ft), resulting in the world’s largest sheet of falling water.

Located on the Niagara River, which drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario, it’s actually comprised of three separate falls: American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls on the U.S. side, and Horseshoe Falls (the most powerful waterfall in North America in terms of vertical height and flow rate) on the Canadian side.

When the falls dry up, the effect will be the equivalent of looking under your sofa for the first time in decades. When crews shut down the falls in 1969, they found two bodies and millions of coins, most of which were removed. (As were the human remains, of course.)

Fish bodies are streamlined and relatively light so a long fall into water isn’t usually a problem. Niagara River expert, Wes Hill, estimates that 90 per cent of fish survive the drop over Niagara Falls. But a waterfall that cascades over rocks, such as Yosemite Falls, will be fatal to all but the smallest fish.

While he doesn’t have safe form, and appears to flip over once or twice no less, it is indeed possible to survive a fall like that — especially with improved technique. Just last month, in fact, a man survived a 170-foot plunge over Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls is the emptying of Lake Erie waters (and Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan waters which feed Lake Erie) into Lake Ontario. As all of the Great Lakes are fresh water, therefore the waters of Niagara Falls are also fresh.

To ensure safe drinking water, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake takes drinking water samples throughout the system every week and has the samples tested for Chlorine, E. coli and other bacteria that may be present. The source water for the Niagara Falls treatment plant is the Welland River.

Niagara Falls will disappear in around 20,000 years because of erosion. Indeed, each year, 3 feet of the falls erode. This erosion rate will cause Niagara Falls to slowly collapse in the future. Erosion is the most likely scenario for Niagara Falls.
