Prepositions are difficult to translate literally Yet another reason why it is difficult to learn prepositions comes from the belief that we all hold, which is that our own language does things “the right way”, and other languages we learn do things in a “strange way” that doesn’t make sense.

English is an analytic language. That means that it does not have ‘endings’ on verbs and nouns to help with the grammatical structure. English relies on word order for its grammatical structure and prepositions are the glue to hold all the pieces together and show the relationships between the various items.

Despite and in spite of are prepositions. Both expressions can be followed by a noun or noun-equivalent. I enjoyed the movie despite having a headache. OR I enjoyed the movie in spite of having a headache.

Prepositions and postpositions are words that precede or follow noun phrases (e.g. nouns or pronouns), and form adverbials with them. Prepositions come before noun phrases, and postpositions come after them.

Conjunctions. Words which connect words, phrases, clauses or sentences are called conjunctions (see “to conjoin” = join, unite). The most common ones are ‘and’, ‘or’ and ‘but’. These words all have different nuances and connotations but they all help to build up meaningful relationships within a sentence.

A preposition is called improper if it is some other part of speech being used in the same way as a preposition. In reference to Ancient Greek, however, an improper preposition is one that cannot also serve as a prefix to a verb.

The determiners a/an and the are called “articles”. They are the most common of all determiners. They come at the very beginning of a noun phrase. We divide them into “indefinite” and “definite” like this: indefinite.

Use “a” before words that start with a consonant sound and “an” before words that start with a vowel sound. Other letters can also be pronounced either way. Just remember it is the sound that governs whether you use “a” or “an,” not the actual first letter of the word.

In English there are three articles: a, an, and the. Articles are used before nouns or noun equivalents and are a type of adjective. The definite article (the) is used before a noun to indicate that the identity of the noun is known to the reader.
