Quartz is our most common mineral. Quartz is made of the two most abundant chemical elements on Earth: oxygen and silicon. Atoms of oxygen and silicon join together as tetrahedrons (three sided pyramids). These stack together to build crystals.

Moldavite (Czech: Vltavín) is a forest green, olive green or blue greenish vitreous silica projectile rock formed by a meteorite impact probably in southern Germany (Nördlinger Ries Crater) that occurred about 15 million years ago. It is a type of tektite.

China, Japan, and Russia are the world’s primary producers of quartz. Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, France, Germany, South Africa, and the United Kingdom also mine significant quantities of the mineral.

Rock crystal quartz is found widely distributed, some of the more notable localities being: the Alps; Minas Gerais, Brazil; Madagascar; and Japan. The best quartz crystals from the United States are found at HotSprings, Arkansas, and Little Falls and Ellenville, New York.

This is harder than many natural and human-made materials like brick and glass, but it is not as hard as titanium or diamonds. The hardness of quartz is derived from its atomic mineral structure. This network structure is why quartz breaks with no clear planes of cleavage, called conchoidal fracture, like broken glass.

Growers produce pink color in transparent synthetic quartz by growing it with impurities of aluminum and phosphorous. Some of these impurities replace silicon in the quartz lattice. Subsequent irradiation produces color centers that give the crystal its pink color.

Quartz is found as large crystals that are often beautifully colored by impurities. The many varieties of quartz are due to formation of different geometric arrangements of its tetrahedral crystals.

Prasiolite (also known as green quartz, green amethyst or vermarine) is a green variety of quartz, a silicate mineral chemically silicon dioxide. It is a rare stone in nature; artificially produced prasiolite is heat treated amethyst.

Is there quartz crystals in space ? Quartz crystal is rare in space, whereas there is quartz on the earth in large quantities. Water produced the granite in the process of partial melting of basaltic rocks, resulting in the formation of large amount of quartz crystals in the continents in the upper crust.

However, you will find that quartz countertops are actually man made and although they consist of 90% quartz, the rest of the countertop is composed of resins, polymers, and various types of pigments. This creates a very durable artificial rock without pores or cracks.

Growing some protein crystals here on earth can be extremely difficult, or even impossible, because gravity causes the delicate crystals to grow with imperfections. Studying crystals in space, where gravity does not get in the way, allows space scientists to grow big and almost perfect crystals!
