Climax. The climax of The Inferno would have to be when Dante and Virgil enter the final circle of hell, the 9the circle. The 9th circle is reserved for the souls that have committed the sin of treachery and treason. These souls are frozen beneath a lake known as Cocytus.

Ciacco foretells violence and turmoil for Florence between its different political factions, spurred on by Avarice, Envy, and Pride. Dante further asks Ciacco about various famous men of Florence who have died and Ciacco tells him that they are deeper in hell. Dante will see them when he ventures further below.

Prompted by Dante’s questioning, Virgil explains that worst punishments (lower circles) in Hell are reserved for the sins that offend God. He also explains that usury—making money by charging high interest on loans—is a sin because humans were meant to make their living from art, or from the work of their own hands.

Tone Dante uses a largely moralistic tone when portraying the figures and events in his poem. At times he also comes across as sardonic or ironic. With his elaborately designed retributions, Dante expresses a belief in, and awe for, the perfection of divine justice.

CONFLICT: The main conflict of The Inferno is Dante’s journey to find God in his life, while those sentenced to punishment in Hell hinder him from the True Path. He also struggles with the pity he feels for those he sees punished in Hell, pity he knows he should not have towards the sinners.
