What is the author’s likely purpose in this passage? Sir Francis Bacon let us know in “On Revenge” that we should look forward in our lives and that revenge is something that causes us to look backwards.

Revenge occurs in two realms: the private and the public. Private revenge occurs in secret with only a few people knowing about it. There is less need for justification because there are fewer people to justify the act to. Public revenge, on the other hand, operates as entertainment or a social event.

How does Bacon believe that acting on revenge affects the law? Revenge helps enforce the law. In paragraph 2, Bacon believes that it is foolish to take vengeance because in doing so one is focusing on the PAST. Bacon believes that wise men focus on the PRESENT and things TO COME.

Exploring revenge as a theme means showing how other characters get wrapped up in the pursuit (either by choice or by force) and how they are forever changed as a result of their involvement.

The central idea of the text is that revenge is a thing of the past. To dwell on revenge is to dwell in the past, never moving forward, and therefore overall not worth the effort.

Worrying over the unpleasant past is an unnecessary and ruinous exercise. There is no man doth a wrong for the wrong’s sake; but thereby to purchase himself profit, or pleasure, or honor, or the like. In the process, he stands to gain some material benefit or some mental pleasure.

Bacon even went on to assert that a man who thinks of revenge is forever nurturing his pain and his wounds, keeping them afresh while one who decides to let it go heals and moves on. Thus, the central idea of the text is that revenge is an unwise and cowardly act/ decision.

‘ Bacon firmly believes in law and justice and thus, he critiques the very idea of revenge and calls it a wild form of justice. He argues that the revenge is unnatural as it makes one equal to the other on whom the revenge is being sought. Thus, he gives the inference that ‘a prince’s part to pardon.

Heathcliff’s revenge in Wuthering Heights is caused by being separated from Catherine. He seeks vengeance on the two people he holds responsible for this, Hindley Earnshaw and Edgar Linton.
