The computer BIOS setup utility (also known as the CMOS setup) is the place where you can change a few basic computer hardware settings. The BIOS contains all the settings and the CMOS memory is a piece of RAM that remembers all the info.

What happens automatically after you exit BIOS setup? The computer needs BIOS to store configuration information that the system needs to boot. When troubleshooting a computer, why might you have to enter BIOS setup?

In order to access BIOS on a Windows PC, you must press your BIOS key set by your manufacturer which could be F10, F2, F12, F1, or DEL. If your PC goes through its power on self-test startup too quickly, you can also enter BIOS through Windows 10’s advanced start menu recovery settings.

When troubleshooting a computer, why might you have to enter BIOS setup? List at least three reasons:Monitor fan speeds, temps and voltage, to change the way/order a computer boots, and device detection/ system performance.

In the BIOS settings screen, locate the password option, configure your password settings however you like, and enter a password. You may be able to set different passwords — for example, one password that allows the computer to boot and one that controls access to BIOS settings.

If the values in the BIOS configuration are entered improperly, the computer prompts you to enter BIOS to fix the problem. You may also be prompted to enter BIOS if one of your computer’s hardware components is malfunctioning.

How to Enter the BIOS on a Windows 10 PC

1. Navigate to Settings. You can get there by clicking the gear icon on the Start menu.
2. Select Update & Security.
3. Select Recovery from the left menu.
4. Click Restart Now under Advanced startup.
5. Click Troubleshoot.
6. Click Advanced options.
7. Select UEFI Firmware Settings.
8. Click Restart.

Method 2: Use Windows 10’s Advanced Start Menu

1. Navigate to Settings.
2. Click Update & Security.
3. Select Recovery in the left pane.
4. Click Restart now under the Advanced startup header. Your computer will reboot.
5. Click Troubleshoot.
6. Click Advanced options.
7. Click UEFI Firmware Settings.
8. Click Restart to confirm.

F2 key pressed at the wrong time

1. Make sure the system is off, and not in Hibernate or Sleep mode.
2. Press the power button and hold it down for three seconds and release it. The power button menu should display.
3. Press F2 to enter BIOS Setup.

Reset the BIOS to Default Settings (BIOS)

1. Access the BIOS Setup utility. See Accessing BIOS.
2. Press the F9 key to automatically load the factory default settings.
3. Confirm the changes by highlighting OK, then press Enter.
4. To save the changes and exit the BIOS Setup utility, press the F10 key.

How to reset BIOS settings on Windows PCs

1. Navigate to the Settings tab under your Start menu by clicking the gear icon.
2. Click the Update & Security option and select Recovery from the left sidebar.
3. You should see a Restart now option below the Advanced Setup heading, click this whenever you’re ready.

Answer: To access your BIOS, you’ll need to press a key during the boot-up process. This key is often displayed during the boot process with a message “Press F2 to access BIOS”, “Press to enter setup”, or something similar.

It is safe to reset the BIOS to default. Most often, resetting the BIOS will reset the BIOS to the last saved configuration, or resets your BIOS to the BIOS version that shipped with the PC. Sometimes the latter can cause issues if settings were changed to take account for changes in hardware or OS after install.
