The pH of water that’s been through a (modern) ion-exchange filter tends to be slightly acidic. The water in the glass was filtered using my Brita water filter and tested immediately. You can see it has a pH of about 5.

While Brita filters do not make water Alkaline, they do an awful lot in the way of making safer, more desirable drinking water. Brita currently produces five filters that are all aimed at removing toxins and metals from water.

My findings were astonishing. A neutral or slightly higher PH is better. Enamel will begin to breakdown at a PH of 5.5, The root surface (dentin) begins to break down at a PH of 6.5….The Experiment.

Brita pitcher filters do not technically filter water; rather, they improve the taste of tap water by reducing metals and additional chemicals. Brita filters do not remove microbial elements but are effective in making tap water much healthier and palatable. The company lists clear guidelines on filter replacement.

Brita’s faucet filtration filters about 30 substances including asbestos, cloudy soil runoff (aka turbidity), benzene and trihalomethanes (THMs, the carcinogenic by-products of water disinfection), 2,4-D, carbofuran, styrene , toluene , VOCs and, yes, lead.

It’s not unhealthy to drink Brita filtered water, but it’s not as healthy as other more effective water filters. Brita and other large water filter brands remove only 6-8 contaminants and mostly focus on removing chlorine.

Brita does a good job at removing chlorine, but Brita doesn’t filter chloramine which is a type of chlorine disinfectant. The filter doesn’t let the water stay on the filter media long enough to remove it.
