The game starts with all 36 marbles outside of the field, leaving the empty hole in the middle of the board. To play, simply jump one marble over another and place it into the tray. Continue jumping over the marbles until there is only one marble on the field. If you end up with more than one marble, you lose.

According to the legend, a French nobleman, who was imprisoned in the Bastille, invented the game of peg solitaire in the 18th Century. Historically, what we know is that the first depiction of the game and a description of the rules date back to 1687 in France.

Equipment. The game of Solitaire is most commonly played on a 33 point board (as pictured above left) in a cross shape with 32 pegs, marbles or pieces.

Setup. The game is begun by dealing forty-nine cards to the tableau,arranged as seven stacks of seven cards each.
