The basilica stood on a 100-by-65-metre (328 ft × 213 ft) concrete and rectangular platform. The thickness of the platform is not known/communicated. The central nave was 80 metres (260 ft) long, 25 metres (82 ft) wide, 35 metres (115 ft) high, with side aisles 16 metres (52 ft) wide and 24.5 metres (80 ft) high.

The basilica is the largest building in the Roman Forum. Maxentius commissioned it as part of a larger infrastructure campaign. This wide-scale building project was used as a political and economic tactic, and was meant to act as a visual sign of the empire’s prosperity under the reign of Maxentius.

As a building type, the basilica is a multi-purpose hall often used for law courts and sometimes housing shops and government offices. The Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine did not have shops and offices; we do not hear of courts meeting here.

The first basilicas with transepts were built under the orders of Emperor Constantine, both in Rome and in his “New Rome”, Constantinople: Around 380, Gregory Nazianzen, describing the Constantinian Church of the Holy Apostles at Constantinople, was the first to point out its resemblance to a cross.

Its design was in many way closer to imperial baths than classical basilicas, as it had huge deeply coffered vaults made of concrete similar to the Baths of Diocletian. The basilica had a plain exterior, with its brick covered in stucco so it look liked ashlar masonry that was typical in late Roman structures.

Under Constantine and his successors this type of building was chosen as the basis for the design of the larger places of Christian worship, presumably as the basilica form had fewer pagan associations than those of the designs of traditional Greco-Roman temples, and allowed large congregations.

Maxentius
The Basilica Nova in Rome was commissioned by Maxentius. He was an emperor of Rome for 6 years until his death in 312 AD. He was in a battle with Constantine over legitimacy to the throne. Constantine eventually became the victor and took the reins.
